About me
I am a native English speaker, born and brought up in the UK. The name 'Asellus' is the Latin name for the 'slater' woodlouse genus. With my degree in Latin and a microbiologist for a dad, the name seemed appropriate.
This page tells you about my freelance translation work, research and teaching.
TRANSLATION
Following a BA in French and Latin with First Class Honours (Royal Holloway, University of London, 2001), I went on to do a Masters degree in Translation (awarded with distinction, University of Surrey, 2003) and have since developed into an experienced practitioner and researcher in the field of translation. I have been working as a freelancer since 2008 and am committed to the ongoing development of my language and subject knowledge via continuing professional development activities.

In my career I have also worked in translation project management and therefore have a thorough knowledge of the stages involved in the translation workflow.
I have been a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists since 2007 and am therefore bound by the Professional Code of Conduct. I was awarded Chartered Linguist status for Translation (FR>EN) and Education in December 2014.
I also have a Certificate in Editorial Skills Certificate in Proofreading and Copy-editing (Chapterhouse, 2005) and am committed to providing work that has been meticulously checked and proofread.
RESEARCH
My PhD in Translation (University of Surrey, awarded 2008) focused on the concept of voice in translation, with reference to five modern English translations of the Roman poet Ovid's text Heroides. I have shifted focus slightly since then and have been working as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Translation Studies at the University of Surrey (UK) on EU-funded projects exploring the use of new technologies in interpreter training. TEACHING
I teach on the French to English business/economic and scientific/technical applied translation modules at the University of Surrey. Working with trainee translators and supervising their projects often leads to interesting and fruitful discussions about different translation solutions and forces you to justify and explain why you think one solution may be more appropriate than another.
I have also tutored GCSE and A-level students in French and Latin.
